portable audio players, commonly called MP3 players, and although able to do more than play to open the mp3 file, now are very common but often fail to keep pace with the times because their manufacturers do not dedicate time to the development of new firmware to allow eg the support of the last and most efficient audio codec format video etc.. it is almost always for reasons of better market launch ... A new version of reader that supports the new formats but in fact has the same hardware as the old, rather than improve existing players with free firmware upgrades.
Now the open source community has created a new project that can overcome these drawbacks and has the name Roxbox.
Roxbox is a modification to the unofficial firmware that allows the reader to support formats like FLAC, Ogg, MP3 and WAV with regard to the 'audio, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 for video, JPEG images and text files etc..
Other interesting news usually cover all the functions that a portable player may offer such as "reading menu: when you're in the car and want to change songs, not to let your eyes off the road, Rockbox will read to you what appears on screen, which are playlists, tracks, menu items.
this is not a hack, your player will not run the risk of being harmed, because Rockbox only compel the reader to run the bootloader to its' start. To uninstall simply delete the folder you just created Rockbox in the root of your player (and possibly start a small program to patch).
The news will be also on the aesthetic side of the menu you can customize your player with Rockbox special issues , with new text fonts and even new set of icons to adapt the program to your taste. In other words
with Rockbox, you can transform and enhance your player, giving it new features that you could have only with the purchase of any new model, improving the ability to play music and maybe making it more malleable towards your needs .
Not to mention that the number of extra features and formats supported increases in the future as the developer community around Roxbox grow. Despite being young, the project has already committed to support several programmers Roxbox a growing number of players of various brands and models, currently only some players can take advantage of Apple, Cowon, iRiver, Archos , Olympus , SanDisk and Toshiba, but the community is working to offer between not much support even to readers of other brands like Samsung, Sony, etc..
